QUEBEC – A woman collapsed and burst into tears today after being sentenced to 15 months in jail for having sex with a 12-year-old boy.
Julie Dorval, 31, became involved with the boy when he made advances to her over the Internet.
“It was her daughter’s boyfriend,” said Crown prosecutor Carmen Rioux after the sentencing. “She stole her boyfriend and made him her lover. They were totally involved sexually.”
“Fortunately some people saw them kissing, walking together and holding hands – a woman of 30 and a boy of 12. They called youth protection.”
The relationship lasted from January 2005 to June of that year and they had sex on several occasions before authorities were alerted.
Although the relationship was not a forced one, the boy was below the age of consent for sex.
Dorval pleaded guilty last April to sexual assault and was overcome when sentence was rendered today. She told her lawyer she didn’t understand what was going on.
She started to stand as courthouse guards approached to take her to her cell and then she suddenly collapsed.
When she seemed to regain her composure, she burst into tears and her current boyfriend, who is in his 20s, also sobbed.
Besides doing jail time, Dorval has to undergo counselling, will be on probation for three years once she is released and has to provide a DNA sample for the national sex offender registry.
She is also forbidden from being alone with children under 14 and must be supervised by an adult if she is.
Rioux said the relationship gave Dorval a feeling of control that compensated for her low sense of self-esteem.
“She was validated when he called her a queen, a princess.”
